In short
For a golf trip to the western Costa del Sol, stay in Sotogrande: Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, Valderrama, La Reserva and the San Roque Club Old Course are all within about 15 minutes of the marina. Finca Cortesin has its own hotel on the course about 25 minutes east, with Estepona as the nearest big town. Valderrama takes visitors only between 12:00 and 13:00, Monday to Thursday, for 700 EUR in 2027 plus a compulsory forecaddie. Spring and autumn are the best months, since July and August are hot.

How tee times work
Every course here books visitors online, but the clubs publish very little about how far ahead tee times open, so book as soon as your flights are fixed, especially for April, May and October. Valderrama is the hard one: one hour a day, Monday to Thursday, with some periods kept for members only, so fix that round first and build the week around it. Real Club de Golf Sotogrande charges the full fee if you cancel within 14 days of play. Carry a handicap certificate everywhere: Valderrama allows up to 24 for men and 32 for women, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande 24 and 30, and La Reserva 28 and 34.
Closures to know about
Valderrama keeps some periods of the year for members and their guests only and does not publish the dates, so check with the club before you build a trip around it. No 2027 closures were published for the other courses on 6 November 2026.
A sensible plan
Five nights in Sotogrande works well, Sunday to Friday so that you catch Valderrama's Monday to Thursday window: Real Club de Golf Sotogrande on Monday, Valderrama on Tuesday at midday, La Reserva on Wednesday and the San Roque Club Old Course on Thursday. Move to the Finca Cortesin hotel for a final night and play there, then, if your flight is late, play Los Naranjos, a short detour on the way back to Málaga airport.
Getting there
Fly into Málaga (AGP): about 85 minutes to Sotogrande and 75 to Finca Cortesin. Gibraltar (GIB) is much closer, about 30 minutes to Sotogrande; since July 2026 the Schengen passport checks for Spain happen inside Gibraltar airport when you land, and you then cross into Spain freely. Drive times on this page are outside rush hour, rounded up to the next 5 minutes. Hire a car, since the courses are spread along the coast and the hills behind it.
Practical notes
- Handicap
- Valderrama: 24 for men and 32 for women, and a certificate may be asked for. Real Club de Golf Sotogrande: 24 for men and 30 for women. La Reserva: 28 for men and 34 for women. San Roque, Finca Cortesin and Los Naranjos do not publish a limit, so carry your certificate anyway.
- Dress code
- Valderrama bans T shirts, sleeveless shirts, jeans, sportswear, swimwear, cargo shorts and shorts above the knee, and golf shoes must have soft spikes. La Reserva asks men for collared shirts with sleeves, tucked in, and bans denim, cargo trousers and shorts, beachwear and football shirts; no metal spikes.
- Caddies
- Valderrama: one forecaddie per group is compulsory, 70 EUR plus a tip in 2027, paid to the forecaddie on the day. Real Club de Golf Sotogrande: caddies must be booked and paid 15 days ahead, and the club may add a forecaddie at its own cost.
- Buggies
- A buggy is included in every Finca Cortesin green fee and in Los Naranjos' low and mid season rates (54 EUR otherwise in 2026). At Valderrama a buggy is 70 EUR in 2027 and depends on course conditions. La Reserva keeps buggies off tees and greens and can make them keep to the paths in wet weather.
- Fourballs
- Valderrama makes every group up to four, and La Reserva may pair smaller groups.
- Practice
- Valderrama and La Reserva let visitors use the range only in the 45 minutes before their tee time.
- Cancelling
- Real Club de Golf Sotogrande charges the full green fee if you cancel 14 days or less before play, and refunds a rained off round only after a 60 minute wait. The other clubs do not publish their terms.
- Stay rules
- Valderrama limits each visitor to two rounds a month and seven a year, bans phone calls anywhere on the club and does not let non playing guests walk the course.
- Summer
- July and August are hot: at Málaga airport the average daily high is about 31°C, so book early tee times in summer.

Costa del Sol golf trip questions
Where should I stay for golf on the western Costa del Sol?
Sotogrande. Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, Valderrama, La Reserva and the San Roque Club are all within about 15 minutes of the marina. Add a night at the Finca Cortesin hotel for that course. Marbella and Puerto Banús are about 45 minutes from the Sotogrande courses, so keep them for the end of the trip.
Can visitors play Valderrama, and how much does it cost?
Yes, but only between 12:00 and 13:00, Monday to Thursday, and not in periods the club keeps for members. The 2027 visitor fee is 700 EUR, plus one forecaddie per group at 70 EUR and a tip, paid on the day. A buggy is another 70 EUR, and each visitor can play no more than twice a month.
Do I need a handicap certificate to play golf on the Costa del Sol?
Bring one. Valderrama sets a limit of 24 for men and 32 for women and may ask to see the certificate, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande 24 and 30, and La Reserva 28 and 34. The other courses on this page do not publish a limit.
Should I fly into Málaga or Gibraltar for Sotogrande?
Gibraltar is much closer, about 30 minutes by car. Since July 2026 the Schengen passport checks for Spain happen inside Gibraltar airport when you land, and you then cross the land border freely. Málaga has far more flights and is about 85 minutes away outside rush hour, or 75 minutes to Finca Cortesin.
When is the best time for a golf trip to the Costa del Sol?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September and October). At Málaga airport the average daily high is about 21 to 24°C in April, May and October and about 31°C in July and August, and November and December are the wettest months, with about 100 mm of rain each.
Can I stay in Marbella and play Valderrama?
You can, but Puerto Banús is about 45 minutes each way from Valderrama and the other Sotogrande courses, and your tee time will be around midday. Sleep in Sotogrande for those rounds and move to Marbella for the last night or two, near Los Naranjos.
